Are the strategies short as well as long?

Several are. Direction is listed on each template, and on venues that support futures or perps a strategy can take both sides. Spot-only connections are naturally long-only.

Can I backtest before going live?

Yes. Backtesting runs your rules over historical data and returns an equity curve and statistics rather than a single number. It is the cheapest place to find out an idea does not work, though a good backtest is evidence and not a promise: markets change and past results do not indicate future performance.

Is Liquid Edge suitable for institutions?

There is a dedicated institutional tier covering additional proprietary algorithms and support arrangements, and the platform's non-custodial design tends to matter more, not less, at size. The institutional page covers what is included.

How often are strategies updated?
